Worship Expectations
Jesus taught how those who followed Him were to
worship. He declared, “God is a Spirit, and those who worship Him must
worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). He also said that additions,
subtractions and innovations are unacceptable (Matthew 15:9).
The Christians at the Church of Christ
collectively seek to follow the simple and spiritual pattern of worship revealed
in the New Testament. Therefore, in our assemblies one can expect the
following.
- 1. The Lord's Supper
- 2. Congregational Singing
- 3. Bible Preaching
- 4. Praying
- 5. Voluntary Contribution
Description of Services
- These five acts of worship are clearly identified and approved of
God as seen in the New Testament.
Since Christians are commanded to meet regularly (Hebrews 10:24,
25), the faithful seek every opportunity to assemble for worship
accepting and practicing only those things for which there is clear
Biblical authority (I Thessalonians 5:21).
- 1. The memorial feast of unleavened bread and fruit of the vine,
observed each Lord’s day in commemoration of Christ’s death (Acts
2:24, 20:7; I Cor. 11:23-26).
- 2. Vocal songs of praise, encouragement and
education in spiritual truths (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16)
- 3. Simple and understandable studies from God’s
word to exhort, rebuke and build faith (Acts 2:42, 20:7)
- 4. Humble appeals of petition and thankfulness to God
through Jesus Christ. (Acts 2:42; I Thessalonians 5:17
- 5. A free will collection from among the members each
Lord’s day to carry out the scriptural work of the church (I
Corinthians 16:1, 2; 2 Corinthians 9:6,7).
